2.
Preparation
What
is all about the video clip?
What
are the things he did for his students?
Do
you have teachers in the past just like him?
So
what are the things he did to show his love?
So,
let’s find out how a teacher showed his love and affection for his students in the story, “Courage” by
Bienvenido N. Santos.
3.
Vocabulary
Game
This game is
called “Quiz with a Twist.” Group yourselves into five. I will use the difficult word in a sentence.
I will give the meaning of the difficult word and then I’ll flash the jumbled
letters. Your task is to arrange the jumbled letters to get the synonyms of
the difficult words.
1. Demeanor- somebody's behavior, or
appearance, especially as it reflects on character
Some of the girls even a number
of the boys were visibly cowed into
submission by the new teacher’s unsmiling demeanor, his businesslike firmness, his detachment.
2. Foghorn- a horn sounded on a ship or
boat when fog reduces visibility, as a warning to other vessels
Javier was the extemporaneous
speaker in the class in spite of a voice that sounded like a foghorn.
3. Fidgeted- to move around in a restless,
absent-minded, or uneasy manner
Maria fidgeted, and only Javier managed to talk coherently in his
foghorn voice.
4. Blunder -to make a serious or
embarrassing mistake as a result of carelessness or ignorance
Often questions were asked
just to make him commit a blunder
but he never blundered.
5. Camouflage- something that is intended to
hide, or mislead
To him laughter in a classroom
was a crime. What was the student’s smile but camouflage for gross ignorance?
6. Affable- good-natured, and easy to
talk to
Why can’t Mr. Torres be like
the other teachers-affable,
pleasant, full of humor?
7. Bewildered -to confuse somebody
completely
Fred was there with a number
of his classmates looking bewildered
and quiet and lost.
8.
Excruciating- extremely painful, physically or emotionally:
tedious, or irritating
He pursued the even tenor of
his teaching days without a sign of the excruciating
pain daily attacked him.
9. Quivering- to shake rapidly with small
movements
Their hearts in their blended
voices, quivering with remorse and
regret.
10. Remorse- a strong feeling of regret
Their hearts in their blended
voices, quivering with remorse and
regret.
11. Replete- having eaten enough to be
fully satisfied
Where’s the land of peace replete?
4.
Listening
Listen
carefully as I read the story,
“Courage” by Bienvenido Santos, then afterwards we will have a round robin
reading.
5.
Discussion
How
did the story start?
Who
is the main character?
Who
is he?
What
kind of teacher is he?
What kind of students are
there in the class?
How
did the students react towards their new teacher?
What
happened to their teacher?
What
are the things he requested his students to do before his death?
If
you were one of the students, how will you
react about this sudden announcement, his death?
When
did the students feel their teacher’s importance?
Why
is it too late to appreciate Mr. Torres?
6.
Generalization
Do
you appreciate him as a teacher? Why?
What
is the message of the selection?
What
is the implication you can get to the story?
7.
Application
Post-listening
Go
back to your groups and let’s have another activity. Pick an activity you
will perform presenting your opinions and point of view based on the
selection.

Student’s Activity
(The students will produce the sounds
of the minimal pairs.)
The video clip is all about a teacher
who loves his students dearly.
He sacrificed his time, effort and
money for his students.
He is patient enough in understanding
his students.
Yes, sir. I had a teacher before when
I was in elementary and even in high school.
I had classmates before who can’t
afford to buy snacks. Then, my teacher
gave them money to buy food in the school canteen.
Even my teacher is sick, she tried to
come to school just to teach us the
expected lesson we have to tackle.
Yes, sir.

FULL
(The students will listen and
afterwards they will read the selection.)
It started with the giving of the
background of the story.
The main character is Mr. Arsenio L.
Torres.
He is the new teacher of Room 8.
He is so serious, not charming and
very strict.
He is very impersonal as what his
students’ perceive.
The students are bright especially in
English. They are talented as well.
The whole class remained quiet while
the class is going on. They don’t like the teacher because of his unsmiling
demeanor.
Their teacher died because of an
illness.
He let the students take charge of the
morning program and they have just 12 days to prapare.
Of course, i will be speechless and
regret for being so insensitive. I
must do something good before he died and let him feel that we love him so
much.
After they heard his death, they
finally felt the importance of their teacher.
It is too late to appreciate him
because we just feel the importance of a person when they are gone or far
away from us.
After knowing that he is sick in
coming to school, i appreciate him as my teacher.
“Realizing one’s worth always come in
the end.”
“Repentance comes at last.”
“Don’t judge the book by its cover.”
We have to know the story behind a
person before judging them because it is one way of respect.
Be sensitive for the feelings of
others.
(Students will pick among the
following activities: debate, public speaking, role play, talk show and
beauty pageant.)
